  Podi idli is a popular South Indian dish made by tossing soft, bite-sized idlis (steamed rice cakes) in a flavorful and spicy dry chutney powder called "podi," typically made from roasted lentils, red chilies, and spices. Often drizzled with ghee or sesame oil, the podi coats each idli piece, giving it a deliciously bold and aromatic taste. This dish is a favorite for breakfast, lunchboxes, or as a snack, and is especially loved for its convenience and robust flavor. Podi idli is commonly served with coconut chutney or sambar, but it’s also tasty on its own, making it a comforting and satisfying option for spice lovers.

INGREDIENTS :-

For idli podi :-

INGREDIENTS:-

* Steamed rice - 1 cup

* Urad dal - 1 cup

* Chana dal - 1 cup

* Dried red chilly - 30

* Peppercorns - 1 Tbsp

* Asafoetida - 1Tsp

* Curry leaves - 4 sprigs

* Salt - to taste

For podi idli :-

* Normal sized Idli - 5

* Ghee - 1 tbs

*Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp

* White sesame seeds - 2 tsp

 * Curry leaves - 1 sprig

* Idli podi - 1 1/2 tbs

METHOD:-

For making idli podi :-

Dry roast all the ingredients one by one except asafoetida powder and salt.

* After cooling down powder it with salt and asafoetida powder.

* Keep it in a air tight container.

* It keeps good for several months.

For making podi idli :-

* Cut the idli into 4 pieces. If you are using mini idli, skip this step. Set aside. 

* Heat a pan add ghee. When it becomes hot add mustard seed. Wait to pops up. 

* Then add sesame seeds and curry leaves. 

* Saute it for few seconds. To this add idli podi. Mix it. 

* Once it done add the idli pieces. Mix it well. 

* Turn off the flame. 

* Tasty podi idli is ready.
