Hyderabadi Spot Idli — a beloved street-style twist on the traditional South Indian idli. Popular on the streets of Hyderabad, especially in places like Gachibowli, Madhapur, and Charminar, this dish combines soft mini idlis with a spicy, buttery masala — cooked right on a hot tawa. Below is a detailed step-by-step recipe to make Hyderabadi Spot Idli at home.
Hyderabadi Spot Idli Recipe:-

Serves
* 2–3 people
Ingredients:-
For Idlis:-
* Idli batter – 2 cups (readymade or homemade)
* butter – for greasing the mould
For spot idli masala powder:-
* Chana dal - 1 1/2 tsp
* Urad dal - 1 1/2 tsp
* Coriander seeds - 2 tsp
* cumin seeds - 1 tsp
* Fenugreek seeds - 1/4 tsp
* Pepper corns - 1 tsp
* Tamarind bits - 2-3
* Garlic cloves - 3
* Asafoetida powder - 1/4 tsp
* Curry leaves -2 sprigs
* Kashmiri chilli powder - 1 tsp
* Salt - to taste
For Masala Base:-
* Butter – 2 tbsp
* Oil – 1 tsp
* Onion – 1 medium, finely chopped
* Tomato – 1 medium, finely chopped
* Green chilies – 1 or 2, finely chopped
* Ginger-garlic paste – 1 tsp
* Curry leaves – 6–8 leaves
* Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp
* Red chili powder – 1 tsp (adjust to taste)
* spot idli masala powder – 1 tbs
* Salt – to taste
* Coriander leaves – finely chopped, for garnish
* Lemon juice – 1 tsp (optional)
Step-by-Step Method:-
Step 1 : Prepare spot idli masala powder
* Heat a pan, dry roast all the ingredients except chilli powder, asafoetida powder and salt.
* Dry roast until golden brown and release a good aroma.
* Then add kashmiri chilli powder, asafoetida powder and salt. Mix it for 1 minute.
* Remove from the flame.
* Let it cool down completely.
* Then grind it to a fine powder.
* Spot idli masala powder is ready. Set aside.
Step 2: Prepare the Masala Base
* Heat a pan add butter and oil.
* Add onions, and green chilies. Sauté until onions turn golden brown.
* Add ginger-garlic paste and sauté until the raw smell disappears.
* Now, add tomatoes and cook until they turn soft and mushy.
* Mix in turmeric, red chili powder, prepared spot idli masala powder and salt. Cook for a minute.
* Turn off the flame and set aside.
Step 3: Prepare the spot idli :-
* Heat a pancake tawa. Grease it with little butter.
* Place spoon full of prepared onion tomato masala into each mould. Gently press it with a spoon to level it.
* Pour the idli batter over that.
* Spread little spot idli masala powderand chopped coriander leaves
* Add a small cube of butter on top for that signature street-style flavor.
* Cover it and cook for about 4-5 minutes on medium flame or until it's done.
* Once it done, flip it and cook the other side for another 2-3 minutes.
* Then remove from the flame and demould it.
Step 4: Garnish and Serve
* Sprinkle fresh coriander leaves and a squeeze of lemon juice.
* Serve hot and spicy spot idlis with coconut chutney or a tangy tomato chutney.
