Kanikonna / About Vishu / Vishu kani


Vishu is celebrated on the first day of the Malayalam month “medam”  (2023 15th April ). Vishu is also known as harvest festival and the astronomical ‘New Year' of Kerala.

Vishu means equal. Which implies the day with equal hours of day and night, that is 12 hours day and 12 hours night.

Vishu is celebrated in all Sri Krishna and Vishnu Temples, especially in Guruvayoor Temple.

Vishu kani and Vishu Kaineettam is the most important aspects of the Vishu celebration.

Vishu kani and Vishu Kaineettam is considered to be the omen of Good luck and prosperity. The devotees believe that Vishu kani would bring them prosperity throughout the year.

Kani is prepared with the the idol of lord Krishna, kani konna, rice, fruits, vegetables, gold, vaalkannadi etc..

On the day of Vishu, after waking up early in the morning and seeing the Vishu kani, the elder person of the family gives Vishu Kaineettam to all the rest of the family.

LEGENDS :-

There are two legends behind Vishu.

First one is, the day when Lord Krishna and Sathya bhaama devi killed narakaasura. Narakaasura is a creul and arrogant demon. He got the boon that only my mother could kill me. Bhoomi devi is Narakaasura's mother. Sathya bhaama devi is an incarnation of Bhoomi devi.

The second one is that Medam 1 that is Vishu is the day when sun rises in the east after Sri Rama killed Ravana. Because, Ravana doesn't like the rays of the sun fell on Ravana's palace. So he was not allowed the sun to rise in the east.
